CPU is only for United's own premier members. As *A Gold, you are eligible for UC access. Your past experience with CPU may be a mistake.
I flew Air New Zealand recently. The only treatment for *A Gold is the early boarding and lounge access. I had to pay for a more spacious economy seat. ANZ does not have FC seats on A320.
NZ will give you a preferred seat free of charge if you call, FYI - used to be the case that other *G could select for free online but that got wiped out sometime during the pandemic
