I know this is the conventional wisdom and for many people that is the case. But as someone who does mostly short-haul by myself and long-haul with others; it allows me to discount CE fares for me which earns me decent status. This is then of use when I'm travelling with others long-haul who don't want to fly Club, but the benefits of the status are apparent and indeed shareable.

Each to their own, I know, but for me there is a sort of logic to it.
