It could be married segment availability - being avaulablle on its own does not imply that there is availability in conjuction with the other flight(s)

Unless there is through availability and you can get AA to rebook such that you are on the same flights, expect to fly as booked.

What time is the AKL-PPT flight?

Be aware that if you make 2 separate bookings amd there is a flight issue and you misconnect, you could be left having to buy a last minute ticket for SYD-NOU. getting to AKL < 2 hours apart worth that risk?
