That would mean wife takes all the risk of a no show SYD-AKL due to a late incoming flight. Not a connection:- just 1 flight ending at an airport and another that happens to start from the same airport.
And at NOU would check she is OK to be admitted to AU. A possibility she may have to go land-side to check in for SYD-AKL, instead of the the arrivals to departures transfer desk/transfer security.
Trying to save a few hours could go pear shaped.
