Hey I live right in the middle of that "horrible connection"! I second the suggestions of others that if you can't rebook, take some time to visit DC. The new metro line in question runs right into downtown, and stops near the National Mall and Smithsonian Museums, among other places. The L'Enfant Plaza stop will also take you within walking distance of the Wharf area on the Potomac river if the weather is nice.
