It is years I have not paid for a standalone travel insurance but worth sharing my situation as you may want to look in one or more of these.

We have basically three covers within the family: HSBC Premier (completely free as no account fee neither), Amex Platinum and Nationwide FlexPlus (£13 per month but you get also phone/tablet insurance for the whole family, the main reason we pay for it really, and also you get Vehicle Breakdown cover, a surplus for me but maybe of value if one is not yet covered by other means). The first two are basically supplied by Aviva And have had great experience with their handling of claims for both HSBC and Amex.
