If so, how nice are the new gold lounges? Are there separate lounges at South and North? Which one is nicer?
I remember the old lounges that are now replaced by the Al Maha lounge were quite mediocre...

Yes, Gold in economy will have access to the new Gold Lounge. Last time I was there, they only had the Gold Lounge South, near A1, not sure if the North one is open yet, others might have a more recent experience. J award will get Al Mourjan.
Gold lounge is a substantial step up compared to the old "Business Class Lounge". The lounge is small, but has nice seating, full manned bar, decent hot and cold food options. It's not a great lounge, but it has closed the gap between it and the Al Mourjan quite dramatically.
