The published benefit does state that the companions be on the same reservation and would be careful staking 7 seats on it.
Just about the millionth example of something at aa.com that is sloppily worded or doesn't quite match up with reality.
Companions have never needed to be on the same PNR in order for them to get complimentary seats along with an elite member. In 20+ years of doing it I've never once had an agent even remotely push back on the request.
