First Wine List
Champagne
Pommery Louise 2004, Champagne, France
In 1874, Pommery created the the [sic] first Brut Champagne, breaking with the traditional taste of sweetness. The purity and finesse of this wine shares the Houses character imbued with femininity and elegance. The palate is decadent, balanced and silky. Floral characters are elevated by hazelnut, yasty [sic] characters and almond paste. The finish is long and polished.
White
Jim Barry The Florita Reisling 2018, Clare Valley, South Australia
rom [sic] a single block planted in Watervale by the iconic Leo Buring in 1962, the Barrys have nursed this fruit to bottle since 1986. It's a wine with a towering reputation. It consistently receives rave reviews and has become one of the most collected in the region.
The Lane Gathering Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2017, Adelaide Hills, South Australia
The wine reflects the unique terroir of the estate more than any other. The blend of Sauvignon and semillon combined with the barrel fermentatio [sic], ripe flavours, minerality and complexity are mirror on the site in which it is grown. An incredibly versatile and foof [sic] friendly wine that offers amazing texture and bright flavours when young, but ages gracefully over many years.
Shaw + Smith Lenswood Chardonnay 2019, Adelaide Hills, South Australia
The wines at Shaw + Smith go from strength to strength. Their attention to details and desire to produce the best wines possible is second to none. A very fine example of modern Australian Chardonnay. Deep aromas of stone fruit and citrus. The palate has great weight concentration and body, but with a perfect amount of acidity to keep everything vibrant. Length that is only found in the finest wines.
Red
Applecross Pinot Noir 2018, Yarra Valley, Victoria
While David Bicknell has a grand reputation for making world class Chardonnay, he's no slouch with Pinot Noir either. Applecross is the side project for Dave who's day job is Chief winemaker at Oakridge in the Yarra Valley. This is perfumed, pure with bright red and black fruits. The palate is lacy, silky and long. Very graceful.
Sexton "Harry's Monster" Cabernet Merlot 2004, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Phil Sexton latest venture is Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley. The skilful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc provides an array of black fruits, good tannins and oak. At the age of four Phil's son Harry imagined that a monster lived in the vineyard that faced his bedroom, hence the name.
Mayer Syrah 2018, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Timo Mayer has become a bit of a renegade character in the Yarra. He makes wine in Germany and in Australia each year, and in doing so continues to define his own style. The Syrah is his cool climate, less jammy expression of the great Shiraz. Tart black plums and black berries are spiced with aromas of black pepper, campfire and violets. It's fairly light in body, and drinks almost like Pinot with a darker, spicier flavour profile.
Dessert and Fortified Wine
Lillypilly Noble Blend 2015, Riverina, New South Wales
This is one stunningly aromatic dessert wine with tropical fruits and glorious fresh vital passionfruit, lychees and pineapple. This wine is a lighter style with lively acidity supporting the fruit characters. Sweet but balanced and seamless in delivery, it will leave you wanting more.
Penfolds Grandfather Fine Old Liqueur Tawny, South Australia
In 1915, an oak cask containing a blend of the finest tawnies the company possessed was set aside for the exclusive use of the Penfold family. This became known as "the Grandfather" due to the great age of the oldest tawnies in the blend. Penfolds Grandfather Liqueur Tawny, a blend of the finest old tawnies and aged in small oak casks, honours this proud tradition and is Australia's leading example of this style. The rich yet delicate fruit character harmonises perfectly with pronounced aged rancio complexity to produce a truly remarkable aged liqueur tawny.
