The oddest part of this for me is that I actively stopped IHG stays over the summer so that I could wait until Q4 before hitting the 40-night milestone. Even if IHG is relaxed about the two year passes, a policy that pushes people away from IHG stays is very counter-productive.
This is an innate problem with any reward programme. At some point your going to have people hit a target and the next ones are either not worth it or are unachievable. However, with this particular benefit, if you achieve it, then it is a pretty big incentive to keep staying; particularly if you're travelling to places with CL.
