I just wanted to close the loop on this. I called back this morning, and after I mentioned I was calling about a CX award ticket, I was immediately transferred to the "international partner desk." I told them the flight number/date I wanted for the stopover in SFO and the agent said it wasn't a problem, but they would need to "do it the hard way" and could send me the confirmation email when they were done. Sure enough, got the confirmation email with the flights I requested listed about an hour later. So it seems like there is still some flexibility regarding a stopover in a gateway city if you get ahold of someone that knows the systems well.
Is your stopover the same class? What's the resulting route, if you don't mind me asking? Thank you.
