Not for BA (and I think in theory all IATA airlines) since they will get the bag to whereever you are. I've previously told the anecdote of someone travelling EDI-LHR, bags were left in Scotland, BA had to get the bags to West Falklands, which would have cost a huge sum to do, but they did exactly that. The EDI-LHR ticket could easily have been £50 or so.

corporate-wage-slave, the biggest issue in that case may be timing. Sure, BA will send your bags on to Sydney if you so wish, but you cannot safely assume they’ll be on the next flight. It may well take several days by which time you may be on your cruise, without luggage, which would clearly be a problem.
Less of a problem if you’re staying in Sydney for a while, but if you’re travelling around AUS or catching a ship it’s clearly more of an issue logistically.
Poor wording on my part, no cruise on this trip, I was just thinking aloud.
