As I said, in many cases, not all cases. I have certainly done that edge case myself many times providing 2U is available. I pass on the GGU fare and just choose the Main fare in itineraries that have multiple segments when the subsequent segment(s) is/are a layover and don't have sufficient U space. If the subsequent segment(s) are a connection then I may, depending on the price differential, purchase the GGU fare; if U space opens I can just call in and asked for the upgrade on the strength of the already applied GGUs. My best is upgrading 6 segments with a single GGU each on an itierary with a companion certificate.
