There was sufficient T/E saver award space for both of the flights, so I don't think it was an issue with the award availability. No stopover scheduled in HKG, only a 3-hour layover before the flight to BKK. The only thing I can think of is that I'd be arriving in SFO more than 24-hours before the CX flight if I don't overnight in PDX, which would I suppose make it a stopover in SFO.
