I had exactly the same problem, and one of the legs of my flight was exactly the same as your flight.
Eventually I had to contact the customer service, through live chat. That was a business in itself, but eventually I got through to a real person.
They were able to book my special meal for me. Even then, it shows up incorrectly as 'no preference'. But, my VGML was correctly printed on my boarding pass, and I was given the meals. I did think the food (in economy) was pretty bad to be honest. But, at least it was VGML.
I was sitting next to someone who had ordered a vegetarian meal through the website. But, the crew hadn't been informed and no meal had been reserved for them. So, it looks as if even if you could book online, it may be better to go through customer service.
