Purser or "First Flight Attendant"

Minor thing, but I was on a SNA-ORD flight last week, and the FA making the announcements introduced herself as the "First Flight Attendant". Got the same thing coming back. Used to be the purser was only on Int. flights, or maybe transcons. Then for the past year or two every flight, no matter how short, had a purser. Now this. What's the difference? Purser higher? More seniority? Where did "first FA" come from. I hadn't heard it before. New UA policy? Just curious.
