Personally on a night flight to CPT if I had to pay for seats I'd save the money on seat selection and spend it on a very nice meal, but each to their own.
Sorry to hear that your Mrs gets nervous, I have known a few other people who suffer from this and it can be very distressing during take off and landing. Good to remind us all that there are other reasons to sit close together sometimes, that don’t relate to conversation.
I do agree that the A380 in F is better for being close to each other.
Having visited Cape Town for the first time this November, I completely agree that you would get a lot of very good food for the seat selection fees!
