The upgrade was for the BCN-LIS leg or LIS-EWR?

It is not an unpublished benefit from Star Alliance elite pax. Most likely pure luck. The gate agent had to upgrade someone to free seats in Economy and by chance you were picked. I wouldn't think too much into it. Someone has to win the lottery...
