If that's your plan please pay close attention to weather dot gov. We cut our Bay trip short and drove back to Tahoe today because heavy weather is rolling in. If you don't want to get stuck at Donner Pass without chains plan accordingly and leave yourself PLENTY of extra time.

Don't wait until Friday either. Go tomorrow (Thursday) and get near the airport at SFO. Friday will be double-bad because a lot of vacation rentals / second homeowners will be trying to "Get a jump" on the weekend traffic.
