Officially what you are trying to do is not allowed, so you may encounter resistance from agents to change your number. You can try asking them to just remove your number which would open it back up for you to add your AA FF#, but the best way is to just pick the option that you are booking for someone else when making the award reservation on BA’s website. For next time.
Also, to the subject of this thread/OP, I’ve always been able to access the reservation using the BA record locator or ticket number.

I always send AA a DM on Twitter - with my name, AA flight #, and Aadvantage #. I ask them to please change the frequent flyer account info from BA to AA. It's always done within a couple of hours and then I can see the flights on my AA account and access the better seat selection.
Thank you both for replying! I was glad to know there are ways to prevent this, but also deal with it in my case. I sent a DM on Twitter as suggested and they replied a few hours later to state they'd made the change. Just selected my seats, so it worked like a charm. Thanks much!
