I haven't flown through DTW since 2001, so thanks for your more-recent intel.
The current Delta terminal (DTW McNamara Terminal) is two modern parallel concourses connected at the middle by the already mentioned underground connector tunnel. This is NOT the DTW of 2001; the now demolished NW Davey Terminal with the labyrinth of 1950s/1960s era finger concourses.
Make sure your carryon will fit on a larger regional jet, the CR9 or E170/175, as referenced above.
