I got zapped by this, at Avis rather than Hertz. It was added to my reservation in the BOS rental car garage (I thought it was strange that I needed to sign again, as I have an automated profile with Avis like I do with Hertz Gold).
Anyhow it was about $150 for "optional service unlimited tolls" on top of the rental fee, something like 10x the actual tolls and at least 5x what the old system of daily Plate Pass fee plus tolls would have costed, which method I have grudgingly accepted over the last decade.
I have complained to Avis, to AMEX, to AARP (which discount I used) and to the CFPB so far. Avis hilariously has not budged on a partial refund, so I'll just keep complaining to every interested or regulatory power I can contact, ad infinitum. I figure I have costed them at least five grand in administrative headaches dealing with my formal complaints so far.
It's a customer rip-off, plain and simple. I suspect it will end in a class action suit in the near term.
