BA is the worst airline for this.

Star aalliance generally, especially LX/LH/NH/Eva have done this so many time. Actually I have had just last week 3 bookings, 3 tickets, 3 airlines:
DXB-ZRH (LX)
ZRH-DOH-BKK (QR)
BKK-SGN-HAN (VN)

LX checked my bag all the way to Hanoi without a quibble!
