We had a 24 hour layover at AMS on our trip to Bangkok so needed a place to stay. Our flight into AMS was arriving about 10AM or so and I felt like the airport property would provide a higher likelihood of an early check-in versus the more centrally located Hyatt, even if we are Globalist. We have been to Amsterdam before so it was not so important that we stayed in a central location.
We had a pretty lengthy delay in baggage so we got to the bus stop around 11.16 and the bust must have just left. While frustrating, It was reassuring that the bus was on time. The bus situation did turn south later as one of their vans broke down and they had to use one that only took about 7 people versus the normal one which could carry 14 people. There is a central bus shuttle stop and you can see signs pointing you to buses in the airport.
After the brief 5 minute ride to the hotel we were cheerfully checked in. It was noted that we were early but luckily our room was ready and it was an upgraded larger king room. Free breakfast as a Globalist was noted and we were given a coupon and schedule for the morning shuttle the next day. You do need to pay for the shuttle on the way to the airport but not from the airport to the hotel. It was free as a Globalist.
Our room was no doubt a Hyatt Place room, the boring decor is unmistakable. It was indeed a larger room and overall it was pretty comfortable. It is worth mentioning that our room was on the 10th floor. Why is this worth mentioning? The elevators for the 10th to 13th floors can only be accessed by the left two elevators in the bank of three. It means you might have to wait on another elevator if the far right one opens up first. You can take a doorway to the left of the elevator bank and use the button on that side and it will ensure you get the far end elevator which will go to your floor. Also, if you get the elevator when returning to the lobby, it might be confusing at first, just follow the sign to go through the door to get to the lobby. Sorry if this is confusing but that is the best I can do to explain it. The floors on the top appear to have a lot more windows which is great except that it was pretty cold in Amsterdam on the day of our visit and the heat wasnt doing it. Not sure if that is due to the energy situation or it just wasnt that good. It was pretty chilly that night. Otherwise the room was comfortable and no complaints.
Since we had so much time, we decided to venture into town. It is about a 20 minute or so to the train station so we decided to get some fresh air and walk. If the weather was better that would not have been such a problem but it was cold and windy, not really a good move on our part. A smarter move would have been to just take the city bus to the airport and take the train there as the train goes right through the airport on the way into Amsterdam Central. I do not know if they would let you have a Globalist free ride on the hotel shuttle just to get into town. On the return, we did take the shuttle from the airport to the hotel and it was a mess with people getting left behind due to the smaller bus. The same situation happened in the morning on the way to the airport.
We had dinner at the hotel and it was actually pretty good. They have a bar which appears to be open all day and they have a restaurant that is open from 6PM. We ate at the restaurant and other than needing to wear a coat due to it being so cold, it was very good for a Hyatt Place. They had a buffet and menu available for dinner and while I am not a big buffet person, the quality and service was very good. Breakfast was the same good quality. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, again, for a Hyatt Place.
We liked our stay and would stay again.
