you don’t really need to ask them to officially switch. Just sit in the seats you are assigned and you’ll be fine. Hopefully the two upgraded seats are together so one parent can be with the toddler. If they aren’t you can try to ask onboard to see if another passenger will switch and especially if you’re switching a window for a window or an aisle for an aisle it’s usually pretty easy to find a passenger willing to switch.
