One week in South Island
We have just one week in South Island in February, looking for feedback on how best to spend this limited time.
Tentative itinerary:
Feb 16 - land in CHC at 2.30 pm after long flights, pick up car, rest overnight at some airport hotel or at Crowne Plaza (booked with points but seems like its a bit far)
Feb 17 - morning drive out, stopping along at Lake Tekapo (church), Lake Pukaki and check into a hotel in Twizel (not booked yet). See if weather permits any glacier landing helicopter trips out of Mount Cook that afternoon or next morning.
Feb 18 - either heli trip or glacier lake kayaking out of Mount Cook, then drive to Queenstown. Overnight stay at Holiday Inn Remarkables or Holiday Inn Queenstown Frankton (booked both with points, any suggestion which is better?)
Feb 19 - day trip to Wanaka. Overnight stay at Holiday Inn Remarkables or Holiday Inn Queenstown Frankton
Feb 20 - morning trip to Paradise / Glenorchy, come back to Queenstown, late check out from hotel and drive to Te Anau. Stay overnight at Te Anau (not booked, suggestion?)
Feb 21 - slow drive in the morning to Milford Sound, cruise, return back to Te Anau hotel
Feb 22 - drive in the morning towards either Oomaru (for evening penguins) or Dunedin (Otago peninsula drive). Stay at one of those towns (not booked yet)
Feb 23 - very early morning drive to CHC to drop off car and catch Noon flight to WLG. (I know its dicey so we will aim to start around 6 am)
(Booked Intercontinental at Wellington 23rd night, international flights out of WLG on 24th. We have the afternoon in Wellington, any suggestions for a stroll or dinner if we are up to it?)
