Maybe it's me: I've gotten way too addicted to 3 large monitors. Using the laptops little screen alone is not easy, even though I did it for many years before multiple big monitors became a standard experience.
I haven't tried it on a plane yet, but assuming the middle seat is empty, you can hook up a portable monitor... Not large, but great if you are comparing code. Next trip (whenever that is), going to try a mini pc setup. Won't be great, but will take care of some of the comfort issues. A bit of extra weight yet, more comfortable.
