Gift card platform for Lufthansa flights goes live

The concept of gift cards is well-established in retail. Fashion, electronics, or books, there are gift card options for almost anything. Within aviation, the situation is a bit different. Here, technological hurdles create complexity which makes it difficult to develop the perfect customer-centric offering.

But the gift card market is promising. For instance, market researchers expect the annual growth rate in Germany to increase by 12.6% between 2022 and 2026 on average. Furthermore, a number of other aviation players already offer gift cards. Both developments hint that this is an exciting market with a lot of potential for the Lufthansa Group.

To understand what is possible here, the Lufthansa Innovation Hub in close cooperation with Fulfillment, Audit & Fraud Prevention (FRA AH/SO-F), Order, Payment & Fulfillment Solutions (FRA AH/SO) and Settlement of Payment Methods (O2C) has developed a digital gift card platform.

The platform will be launched as a ‘minimum viable product’ (MVP). Accordingly, the setup is simple. Gift cards with a freely selectable amount can be purchased, gifted, and then redeemed on lufthansa.com. The aim is to test and understand the customers.

Further feature ideas are already in the pipeline, for instance, a ‘gifting together’ option. This allows for different parties to jointly gift a voucher, while still contributing an individual amount. But even though there are many ideas floating around, the exact setup of the gift card platform will evolve and materialize in dialog with the customer.

The voucher platform is live. Customers and employees can now purchase gift vouchers for family and friends. Happy shopping!
