If you are brave and risk tolerant, try the SDC feature during web (not app) check in! It looks like it might work painlessly, but we don't have any data points so would be great to get one. I can be the data point for this. Traveling SFO-DTW tomorrow and was booked on the 10:21 PM flight (RUC applied, ticket reissued). The afternoon flight was J1Y0 (no RUC availability).
The app didn't offer any SDC options but the website let me switch (during the check-in flow). Booked into OL on the new flight despite there being no RUC space, ticket wasn't reissued but I was able to check in immediately. Probably took less than 30 seconds from logging into the website to getting the new BP.
