This seems like the best alternative. In fact when heading to the airport using a rideshare, I'll often select the International terminal as the destination to minimize the domestic terminal traffic variable.
Another option may be use the Rental Car Center drop-off/pick-up location and have passengers take the AirTrain to/from the terminals? Perhaps easier for the driver (assuming there is in fact traffic at the terminals), but more inconvenient for the travelers.
