New flyer and had my first cancellation last Sunday 11th on BA869 to Budapest. Got to the airport 2 hours before departure to see the cancellation (with no notice prior).

BA offered a flight on Tuesday 13th which we accepted, but we then saw long haul BA flights were taking off (and flights from Gatwick/Luton were taking off to Budapest).

Ended up calling BA and asking to be put on a WizzAir flight from Luton departing that night, which they denied given we’d already taken the Tuesday flight. I then got the Tuesday flight refunded (avios booking) and went on the WizzAir flight on the 11th anyways.

Haven’t faced a cancellation before or done an EC261 so made a lot of mistakes in the panic. Wondering what I’m eligible for? Would an EC261 cover the WizzAir flight + travel to Luton expenses? Would I also get the €250 in compensation for the cancellation?
