it is definitely ambiguous (IME) whether award flights are covered at all via Amex. My interpretation, based on insurance companies doing everything they can to get out of paying as possible, is that it wouldn’t be. While they cover vouchers issued by an FF program, in combo with an eligible card, there’s definitely no specific wording on award miles/flights, so I assume that’s off (no direct experience). I book award tickets and pay with my CSR since they are supposed to with awards - and have experience having change fees reimbursed (when those were a thing) a few years ago.
oh award flights are covered. Last year I booked with MR through ANA flying ORD-Asia-ORD (1 month stopover)-East Coast and a seperate AA award ticket East Coast-ORD and got delayed in East Coast and was able to get $500/night hotel reimbursed lol

BBB-CCC booked completely with airline credit is definitely ineligible, with no excess payment on Amex, it isn’t going to be covered.
Would this be true? I would really hope that this still constitutes a "combinations of roundtrip and one-way tickets ... charge[d] in combination with your Eligible Card and accumulated points on your Eligible Card or redeemable certificates, vouchers, coupons, or discounts awarded from a frequent flyer program or similar program"
