What "Source" do you want?
Are you saying you need some sort of "Proof" that United can change fare buckets whenever they want to?
Do you need proof there is a Hidden and a public upgrade list? This is well documented on this site - google is your friend
Do you want me to explain how this happens almost DAILY on international flights at the 24-72 hour mark before the flights when GS call in to push upgrades (They must be top on the list to "Push" an upgrade but it happens and IME 1K can do it roughly 24hrs out as well. The GS thing is a DOCUMENTED benefit (although recently change from 2 to 3 left after the upgrade)
Nothing in the OP scenario isn't happening daily - so if you want a "Source please be a TON MORE SPECFIC and I'll feed you the threads that align with what you want to see.
I also use between 1100 and 1400 PP a year typically, so I have quite a bit of personal experience in this matter

We already know this is BS because a GS in economy EVEN DURING battlefield upgrades goes in front of ANYONE in O,A,R (prem economy) cabin.
In addition, this, to me, is the battle field option. At the gate 45 min before departure.
So, basically it comes down to a single thing - when does it go from revenue/fare buckets control to Battlefield control.
For instance - a 1K buys a economy ticket for himself, wife and daughter to travel EWR-BCN (90 days from departure) and the fare codes are PN4, PZ3 and he applies PP and gets upgraded to Business at time of purchase. Then the fare buckets go to PN0, PZ0. The next month a 1K buys a Ticket in Prem Plus O fare class and applies PP to the reservation and a GS buy a economy ticket and applies PP. Neither are upgraded due to PN0 and PZ0. Eventually Business class sells out - but the original 1K was upgraded - do they get downgraded for the GS - HELL NO - because of fare codes at the time.
Skip to boarding and one business class passenger doesn't show up for the flight - who gets the upgrade - per the cited material it is the 1K in pre plus - BUT - we all know it will be the GS in economy
Second scenario - 26 hours before the flight it goes to PN1 and the GS calls in and has his upgrade pushed thru and the 1K gets "Jumped" neither of which follow the rules posted by UA above but they happen every day.
