Very unfortunate situation and very frustrating. I also think asking the gate agent for early boarding would probably be your best bet. They will see your reservation and your mom is older - they do allow those with needs to board earlier.

We had a cancellation in Europe United back to the states and we had to take a flight the next day. It definitely sucks and that it doesn't qualify for EU261. They should have a similar rule here.
