Child in their own PNR

Can you book a child (3) in their own PNR or do they have to be in the same PNR as the adult they are traveling with?

Child will be traveling one way with mom and returning with dad and want to book an RT ticket as it’s much cheaper. Domestic short haul flights for all legs. Thanks!
