I would wait and see what happens closer to departure. There is always the chance JetBlue implements a more lenient policy or your flight gets cancelled or substantially delayed which would make you eligible for a refund.
In theory, I love that idea. In practice, I'd like to book a flight to an alternative South American destination in the same time frame in the next few days, and don't want to be in a situation where I use points/$$ for that flight AND don't get refunded for my Peru flight.
