I'll just add to everything that has already been posted here that Aguas Calientes is a car-free town. Hotels can arrange to have luggage picked up at and delivered back to the train station using electric powered flatbed hand carts/wagons. In Cusco, we used taxis to get from the airport to the hotel and back. Otherwise, we walked.

We used Verizon TravelPass. We had service everywhere except on the Inca Trail and the Reserva Nacional Tambopata. I didn't check in Machu Picchu, frankly, we were too busy enjoying the visit to the site, however, service was good in the town of Aguas Calientes.
