My attitude about the meter has changed over the years. I really don’t care much any more when the driver asks me for what invariably ends up being a hundred or so Baht more vs what the meter plus tip (and tolls for some trips) would like likely have been.
The official/meter price for taxi rides in Bangkok has barely changed at all in my 20+ year, extensive Thailand experience.
It is not worth even 2 minutes of my time to save that money and I feel zero compunction to hold the line like it’s some moral imperative.
I’m also not interested in whether the taxi driver looks down on me for this. Plus I speak Thai pretty well, and am at home culturally beyond that, as well. This often quickly dispels whatever impedence mismatch can give rise to a “look down on” situation.
For me, it’s just not worth caring about this taxi meter issue any more.
