I suspect that the DL gates are not international-capable. A plane arriving at those gates has no way of having passengers sent to the immigration hall. Whereas the VS/BA pier (and the separate LH pier are of course equipped to serve international flights.
If I am not mistaken, there are 2 gates used to disembark international pax and the plane was then towed to its departure gate. That's what DL was doing when they were flying CDG-EWR-CDG (B767). I have seen other airlines like La Compagnie doing this at EWR. Not very convenient for sure as it can result in a long wait before reaching one of those gates if occupied.
