I recently had a similar situation to OP's and was able to cancel from the app at about T-15 mins. (ironically, while sitting on the runway at LAX waiting for a gate to open) under "trips" by hitting the the three dots to the right of the flight.
This is how I cancel flights on the app as well. Although it seems like it just redirects to a webpage within the app anyways.
