I would book something with AA miles now, and then monitor redemption rates and cash fares (from a variety of airports) as departure date approaches. All flight awards booked with AA miles are now fully refundable; it's possible -- but not guaranteed -- that redemption rates on AA metal will come down and/or that award availability on JL will open up.
