Concierge waives change and refund admin fees, I see. Do you still have to book a changeable and/or refundable ticket to take advantage, or does that tier render all tickets changeable/refundable?
You won't lose the upgrade if it has only been requested and not confirmed. Concierge waves the change fee but does certainly not give you any refund or exemption from price differences when you change (except maybe same day changes to an earlier or later flight). To have a refundable fare you need to book a flexible ticket, that's the only* way.

*Or though I think you could book an economy ticket (to the US) and call up to try to get your upgrade confirmed straight away. If it's not immediately confirmable then cancel the flight and get a full refund (needs to be within 24 hours of booking and only to/from the US and the booking made min 7 days out from flight).
