Obviously I could buy a RT ticket and throw away the return flight, but the more intriguing question is this: After completing the first leg of the trip could I change the "return" flight to a transcon domestic ticket? And if I could, would the value for the unused return flight (MIA-FCO) be 1/2 of the original RT ticket cost (i.e. $1650 in this scenario)?
Typically the ticket would be repriced since the rules for the roundtrip we're no longer being followed so the remaining value would be either $0 or DL would demand that you pay $1700 to change the $3300 ticket into the $5k one-way (the latter is more likely if they see that you are making a habit of not flying the return leg of the round trip).
