On the way back, he is all United, but marked by SWISS. My question is, will he be an unaccompanied minor during this trip? Because it is booked with SWISS, we can folly book it without him being an unaccompanied minor, even though United would make him be 15 to fly alone on United flights.

I don't need or want him to be an unaccompanied minor, so please let me know what would happen! SWISS will let us book the trip without him being unaccompanied, even thought United's age is 15.
Welcome to FT, Jackls!

Since Swiss will permit what you wish to do and UA will not, I wonder if you have considered driving from Grand Rapids to Chicago and using LX for the transatlantic flights in both directions. I have never been to Grand Rapids, but it appears to be less than 3 hours from Chicago by car.
