Is this officially sanctioned, or will they not really ask to check their boarding pass and its more of a 'shut your mouth and pretend we're flying together' situation. Assuming they let us into the lounge, my friend's flight leaves about an hour after mine. If I leave before they do, and the front desk staff notices this, is it possible they'll be asked to leave?

My instinct tells me it's fine but I'd hate to create an awkward situation at the lounge and dash our hopes of relaxing in comfort for a bit.
Not specific to guests - you need to have a United boarding pass to enter the Club and both you and your guest need to scan your boarding passes.
