When renewing passport in person under the urgent travel process (in-person appointment within 14 days of travel), when you bring a printed itinerary as proof of travel, are they calling the airline to confirm or otherwise doing some kind of confirmation?

At these urgent passport renewal appointments, are they typically printing the new passport right then and there, or do you typically have to wait another couple of days for it to be mailed or maybe even return to the facility to pick it up?
