My impression of the difference between VS Premium and DL Premium Select is that Virgin treats it like a separate class, but Delta treats it as coach class with a better seat module and a couple of superficial perks that didn't mean all that much.
On Virgin you get a PDB that is a generous portion of champagne served in a real glass. On Delta, you don't get a PDB, but rather after takeoff you get a couple of ounces of white wine or sparking water served in a rigid plastic cup. On VS you get a small fabric amenity kit. On Delta you get a Comfort+ "travel kit" in a plastic envelope with a picture of a boat in a canal.
I didn't eat dinner or breakfast on VS BOS-LHR because we ended up taking off from Logan at 11:09 pm (about a hour late), and all I wanted to do was sleep. I ate the lunch served on Delta today, For all the world it was a coach meal served in three separate containers on an oblong blue tray. The main was chunks of roasted chicken white meat, with carrots, spinach and whole white potatoes (like those you get from a can). There was a sort of caprese salad, and then there was a portion of salted caramel ice cream. There was no separate cocktail service, but drinks were served at the same time as the food was served. The second service which started around Bangor, Maine consisted of a choice of a chicken filled Spring Roll or a puff pastry with a spinach and cheese filling. I had much better FA service in F on my JFK-CLE connection today than I got in PS from the staff on DL2
All in all I had solid flights on both VS and DL. Where DL was superior was on seat comfort, as its PS seat cushion was vastly more comfortable than what I sat on during the VS flight, which turned out to be akin to a leather covered piece of concrete. The Delta seat also had better seat back recline and a motorized leg rest with a fold out pedal for one's feet. Were were on an A330-900neo BOS-LHR which was about one month old. Maybe the seats will get broken in and get comfier as a result, but VS needs to take a look at the seat cushion issue.
VS used automatic boarding gates at its Gate E12 in BOS. The VS Clubhouse in BOS, operated by Plaza Premium, was nothing special, although it had plenty of self-serve soft drink options. The VS Clubhouse in LHR is still a pretty great airline club. I noticed that they added at least three Peloton-style exercise bikes in a glass partitioned room to the right of the main bar. The VS counter agent who checked us in at LHR today was outstanding. We went out of Gate 34 in LHR T3 today, which I had never been to before (I think other airlines used to use the gates in that pier).
The bottom line is that Delta charges hundreds of dollars more for a product similar to that on an airline of which it is the 49% owner. VS needs to improve on recognition of Delta elites, as it only granted early boarding privileges to members of its "Flying Club Gold" level.
