Just came back from a stay at Takachicho Shinsen and the food plus service is indeed amazing.
Amane Seikai in Beppu has great cost/performance ratio and there is a great variety of food to choose from between herself and her sister hotel Gahama Terrace next door. It is often fully booked and rooms reservations are hard to come by.
