You need whatever app/paperwork is required for entry to Oz. You will not enter Japan.

2. We have about 1hr 30mins to get the next JAL flight to Sydney JL 51, will we need to collect our luggage and check back in before going to gate ?
No, as above, you will be in transit and your luggage will be checked to final destination (assumes same ticket or all JAL flights).

3. Generally does the connecting flight JL 51 need to wait for the incoming flight JL 44 before it can depart ?
There’s no guarantee that they will hold the flight.
However, if the flight does arrive late, there are usually JAL ground staff at the plane door to hustle transit passengers through the process to their connections.

4. Anything else we need to be mindful of flying into HND ?
Per Japanese custom/practice, you are expected to wear a mask on the plane and in the airport.
Not all stores are open at HND so don’t plan for a full retail experience.
