I flew LAX-AKL that way recently...and slept very well indeed.. (with good earplugs lol) I am NOT tall however, and don't mind sleeping somewhat curled up. The bed, while short, is actually WIDER than NZ's Business class product (I flew that on the way over) so the options for HOW one lies down are broader than they might have been.. I will certainly use that option again when business class specials are not available!
I have the gift of being able to sleep (almost) anywhere. I have good ear-plugs (I work in the touring concert industry) and light doesn't both me much. I'm 5'11" but figure with a little bend at the knees, I should be fine on my side. As for the economy service, I plan to sleep as much as possible and watch movies on my computer or phone, so not too worried about it. Sure, a lie-flat in business would be amazing, but that's about 10K. From all my research, it seems that the skycouch is a better option for me than premium economy, which prices out almost the same. I think my Amex plat will get me into a lounge in AKL on the return after the red-eye from Perth, so I can shower / freshen-up before undertaking the 16 hours back home.
